Liz McIntosh
Biography:
After serving 12 years of primary school Headship, I am currently an Education Consultant. I support primary schools with middle and senior leadership development. I also provide coaching to Headteachers. In addition to this, I am an Ofsted inspector, inspecting primary, special, independent and ITE settings. I also work as a tutor for e-Qualitas (ITE) supporting trainees and delivering geography curriculum training. I am a facilitator for LLSE (Thames Gateway Teaching School Hub) for the NPQH programme.
My top three coaching values are authenticity, honesty and resonance. It is important as a coach to engage in active listening and be fully present, but in addition to this, to be authentic in approach. I believe this helps to build relationships quickly and creates a sense of credibility. This links with resonance in the sense that the formation of trusting and encouraging relationships are paramount. In order for this to be done effectively and swiftly, honesty is required from the outset.
In addition to this, confidentiality is paramount unless there are any safeguarding concerns. However, this is explained at the beginning of any coaching sessions.
The approach I believe that is the most effective is a self-directed learning model (Boyatzis). It is straightforward, effective and logical.
A key aspect of the model is having a focus on the ideal self and the real self. Supporting coachees to bridge the gap between the two until the desired outcome is reached, I believe, is the essence to this model. It is rewarding for both the coachee and coach.
